The process

The idea of sitting in a room with a mental health professional can strike an uncomfortable chord especially before the initial visit. I am here to reassure you that taking constructive steps to maximize your own happiness through self-knowledge, self-improvement, therapy and if necessary medication is not self-indulgent nor is it a character flaw.

It is part of being human.

Step 1: Online completion of forms

Communication is everything. We start the process by clicking on the blue tab above “Book a Consultation” and completing an admission form. This approach will kick-start the admission procedure and can be done on your schedule. I get it sometimes your to-do list is an long as your arm and getting through each day can feel like an up-hill struggle. This initial step will greatly facilitate the next step: The Psychiatric Evaluation which will be in 1-2 weeks after completion of admission form depending on the flexibility of your schedule.

Step 2: Psychiatric Evaluation

This comprehensive initial visit is a vital component of the treatment plan and done in my private office, face-to-face. My goal is to form a healing relationship with you and this is best achieved when the initial visit is done seated and in-person. During this 60 minute visit I will gather a complete database. This will include a history of the current illness, previous mental health history, personal and social background, family history, medical history and mental status examination. I may also collaborate with your primary care provider as physical illness can play a vital role in creating or extending psychiatric symptoms. If you are currently in psychotherapy, I will collaborate with your therapist at your request. The information gained in this initial session will be incredibly helpful in formulating a personalized treatment plan and will provide material for future sessions.

Step 3: Medication Management

Medication is not the solution for everyone. However when medication is deemed necessary evidence-based will be prescribed. Medication management sessions last 30 minutes. Appointment intervals range from one week to 3 months, it all depends on the presenting issue. In these sessions we will decide on specific goals for treatment, both clinical goals and goals related to quality of life. We will discuss drug therapy options to target concerning symptoms. and the parameters for monitoring success of therapy. Every session will include specific medication and health education. We will also discuss potential adverse reactions, alternative options including over-the-counter medication options and recommended lifestyle changes. I am a firm believe in empowering my clients with knowledge and supporting them through the process, We work as a team and ultimately you are the decision maker of the treatment plan after I have presented best available options. I am devoted to increasing your awareness of treatment options and supporting your decisions. Unfortunately there is still an ongoing stigma attached to mental health, but being mentally well should stand on par with being physically well. The upside could be the beginning of a life-changing journey.
